Well, here we are.  The 2016-2017 school year is over as I get ready to say good-bye to my wonderful group of students tomorrow.  I just wanted to say what a pleasure it was to be able to teach this grade 4 class this year.  Each and every one of my students is an unique and remarkable individual and I applaud your hard work and accomplishments this year.  Bravo mes amis!  While I am your teacher and I am here to impart knowledge to you, you in turn are teaching me as we share our stories and celebrate each other throughout the year.  Congratulations to you all and have a safe and happy summer!

It has been a couple of busy days here in the grade 4 classroom.  We have been busy with our learning centers, finishing up a variety of assignments and of course preparing a little something for our dads!

Please remember that Monday is our scheduled Sports Day.  Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather and if needed has sunscreen and a hat.

June 21st is the last day of school for students.  We will dismissed early on this day.

Have a great weekend!

Today was the first day of our last 7 day cycle!  Wow!  The year has gone by so quickly.

Today we started our centers.  I have 6 centers set up in the classroom: math games, math art, math 3D art, language arts/ science informational booklets, health comic strip and social studies tourism advertisement.  We started these today and will continue with the centers for the rest of the week during our morning session.  The class was excited to get started and completed three rotations today.

The class had music today.

During the first part of our afternoon session the students continued presenting their book reports.  As there was not enough time for the whole class to finish their presentations today, we will finish these on Thursday.

To end the day the class had buddy reading with their favorite little readers.

A letter went home with your child today for your child to order lunch if he/she wishes for Sports Day.  Please complete and return along with the necessary fees.

Please note I will be absent tomorrow: hence, there will be no blog post tomorrow.

Important dates:

  • June 19th – Elementary Sports Day
  • June 21st – Last day of school for students!

  • Book reports for those who did not present today.

Today in math we reviewed and discussed the different aspects of a 3 D object: faces, vertices and edges.  We also reviewed how to identify an object as a triangular or rectangular prism.  The class completed a journal entry to demonstrate their understanding of prisms.

In French, the class completed an independent piece of writing in which they were asked to imagine that they were dreaming about their summer vacation.  They had to describe their dream.

In science we read and discussed how ecosystem engineers, like a beaver, affect other populations.  We also learned how invasive species, like the green crab, affect other populations.

During our afternoon the students began presenting their book reports.  As there was not enough time for the whole class to present, we will continue with these tomorrow.

Important dates:

  • June 19th – Elementary Sports Day
  • June 21st – Last day of school for students!

The class started their day by going outside for gym.

They also had music this morning.

Today in math we started observing and discussing 3D objects.  This is a very short chapter with just a few lessons.  Today we looked at lessons 1 & 2 since there were no exercises to complete in lesson 1.  We completed the four exercises in lesson two as a whole class.  The main goal of this chapter is to be able to identify the attributes (the number of faces, vertices and edges) of rectangular and triangular prisms.

In language arts the class complete a reading comprehension exercise.  They were given a selected text with a number of questions based on the text to demonstrate their comprehension.

In social studies we continued our study of our beautiful country by reading and discussing how the population has changed and what influences where people live; for example, family, employment, services, climate and landscape.

We ended the last 20 minutes of our day outside enjoying this beautiful weather!

BOOK REPORTS are due MONDAY, JUNE 12th!  The class will be presenting their book commercials to the class during the afternoon!  I am really looking forward to seeing how their cereal box book reports turned out.

Please note ALL library books are now due back to the library.  Please check with your child to ensure he/she has returned all their books to the library.

Important dates:

  • June 12th – Book Report/ Commercial due

Today in math we corrected our exercises that focused on expressing area in cm2  .  The class completed a number of exercises in their math journal to demonstrate their understanding of area.

In social studies the class begin a simple project on the six physical regions of Canada. Each student was given one region to focus on for this assignment.  They had to complete four sections in their foldable based on their region: climate, elevation and physical characteristics, natural resources and vegetation.

In language arts we completed a listening exercise.  I read a selected text to the class and they were required to answer a number of questions based on what they heard.

In science we continued with our unit on habitats.  Today we discussed the difference between producers and consumers; we discussed what it means to be a predator and a prey; and we discussed what is a food chain.

To end the day we went to the library.  Please note ALL library books are now due back to the library.  Please check with your child to ensure he/she has returned all their books to the library.

My oldest daughter loves pineapple art.  Today’s picture made me think of her.

Today in math we corrected our exercises on lesson 7 on page 287 about finding the area of an object by counting the square units.  The class seem to easily understand this concept.  Today, in lesson 8, we continued talking about area using square centimetres.  The class was given grid paper to reference as each square is 1 cm2  .  After the introduction we completed a few more examples together and then the class was given exercises 2, 6 & 8 to practice individually.

The class had gym outside today.

In language arts, the students had fun sharing what type of duck they were and interesting facts about that type of duck.  We also finished our read aloud about killer whales.  As we read we discussed the whales physical and behavior adaptations, communication methods and protection strategies.  We also identified any words the class did not know.  We will use this information for our last writing piece.

After lunch the class went to a band presentation.  Next year in grade 5 the students have the opportunity to join band; hence, Mr. Grandy had a little demonstration today to introduce to all the band instruments to the grade four classes.

BOOK REPORT – Today I handed out a “Cereal Box Book Report” and commercial project to the class.  The students can pick any fiction book of their choice for this assignment.  All the directions and necessary templates were given to them today.  It is due Monday, June 12th.

To end the day the class had music.
